bracing themselves on the shoulders of one another,
knowing how important it is to hold the pose.
So pause for this moment,
keep face, don't break away,
and don't let go.

Do you feel the weight of waiting?
While others debate your natural state
you hold your stance...
bearing it all but barely glancing at the etching hands.

You were only bathing naked
but maybe later you'll be displayed in a famous painting,
but for now your friends are imitating
Monet and Manet.

How many hours were you laying there for?
How many dollars were they paying for you to stay?

Are you elated to be a lady,
or do you find yourself feeling insatiable lately,
especially when others tell you the best way to behave?

How many scholars wrote their papers?
How many gentleman callers came running with favors?
Trying to sway you over so they could gain your claim?

I wish we could see the whole picture,
that you were more than a model,
more than a figure,
hanging on a wall for all to see,
stuck inside a frame...

you were a human with a history...
you were a woman with a name.
